How do I go about applying for residence as a Skilled Migrant in New Zealand?

Can I claim points for my qualification?

If your qualification is not listed on the List of Recognised Qualifications you will need to contact the New Zealand Qualifications Authority for assessment details.

Were any changes announced in December 2005 for Skilled Migrants?

Certain changes such as the selection process, the change of time period that the Expression of Interest forms stay in the ballot, changes to work to residence deferral period and so forth. A more detailed look at this can be found here.

What documents do I need to submit with the Expression of Interest form?

You do not need to send any documents with this form, if you are invited to apply for residence they will then ask you to send the relevant documentation. If you need more space to finish answers then you can provide additional pages.

Sometimes they may ask for certain documents to aid the government in their verification process.

Can I claim points from work experience?

If your work experience is relevant to your qualification, relevant to your current or offered job or skilled because you have gained certain technical or knowledgeable expertise required for a certain job. You can only gain points for work experience if it was gained through a comparable labour market. The country's listed below are considered to be in the bracket of the comparable labour market:-

If your work experience was gained in a country not listed, you will only gain points if you gained your experience at a multinational commercial entity domiciled in a listed country. You cannot gain points for skilled employment if you are working in your own business. If you want to apply for residence through self-employment then you should apply under the business categories.


What were previous selection points for the Expression of Interest form?

All correctly filled in EOI forms are submitted into the Expression of Interest Pool where the EOI's are ranked from highest to lowest points claimed. A selection point is set by the Workforce Deputy Secretary before each selection form the Pool. EOI's that have a points total equal to or above the selection point are selected.

Selections were made on the following basis from 21st December 2005:

  • Total points of 140 or more are automatically selected
  • Less than 140 points but include points for jobs or job offers are selected in a specific amount of numbers to meet New Zealand Residence requirements
  • Additional EOI might be selected to meet New Zealand Residence Programme requirements set out by the Minister of Immigration.

The last selection made was on the 13th September 2006 with the total number of EOI's selected being 672.

How long will the EOI stay in the ballot pool for?

If your EOI is not selected the first time it stays in the ballot pool for six months. If it is still there after six months, it will be taken out and you will be told about the change in circumstances. If you want to you can enter another EOI. If they have not made any selections in the six month period, then the EOI's will stay there until they make the next selection. If you need to make any changes to the EOI you need to inform the correct authorities otherwise they can reject your invite to apply for residence.

Does the qualification I have need to be assessed by the NZQA?
